book (design) story #744
hermann ullstein:
wirb und werde!
verlag a. franke a.g., bern, 1935
size: ?? x ?? cm
designer: (unknown)
hermann ullstein (1875-1943) was a german publisher. in 1934 the berlin-based business of the jewish family was "aryanised". hermann finally emigrated to new york in 1939.
this book on advertising has a funny title: "wirb und werbe!" (advertise and become!) mocks a famous quote of goethe's:"stirb und werde" (die and become!).
i guess ullstein was not able to publish in germany anymore, so this book was published by the bern-based a. francke company.
the design of the jacket and title page show a certain modernist influence – possibly by the same unknown designer who also worked on book 459?
there are numerous reproductions of "good" ads, and the author leaves no doubt about where good advertising originated: the u.s.a.
below the famous dog listening to "his master's voice".
swiss examples include this ad for "hero", a producer of jams/preserves, ...
... and this stunning modernist ad for "bally", the shoe brand.
